“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Hello Dear Hearts..I am wishing you a safe holiday weekend. I am on Drayton Island again…we are working on the old house. It still amazes me that it’s 128 years old…spirits dwell in the house and on this land (quite an amazing history here..from an Indian village to plantations). Some day I will try to tell you more…the house used to be on the mainland but we had it brought over on a barge to save it.
I posted Wisdom of the Acorn some months ago…at the beginning of gypsy-heart when I was basically on here chatting with myself. eh,eh Anyway, tonight I was looking for a quote for something else when this quote appeared, and I knew it was what this piece was about. As I told you before, sometimes I don’t know what the meaning is until it is revealed to me…sometimes long after.
So here is the original post from last September:
“This is a piece that I did a few years ago… a miniature still life. It’s one of leaves with an acorn as the main subject. It remains in my possession, and it is another one that I will not sell.
It sums up how I feel about life…especially my own.
First, let me tell you about the piece. It’s 12″ x 12″ charcoal on gessoed masonite. I was in a class, and we were to do a still life (our choice of items). I didn’t want to select something from the same familiar still life materials in the studio so I walked outside. I was about to give up and return to the studio when I looked down and I saw my still life…like a little gift calling out to me.
Charcoal was my medium choice…I thought it only fitting to use something that is charred wood. Besides I have always loved the feel of charcoal in my fingers…no brushes separating us.
Such a small seed holding the beginnings, the blue prints if you will, of what can become a magnificant oak tree (or a thousand forests :). A tree that can far out live us. The secrets of life all summed up inside that little seed…from beginning to end. The answers revealed to those who discover the open door.
On the surface an acorn seems so different than you and me…yet we are much the same. We are of the same energy…and we have the same life cycle…birth…life…death…birth. There is so much more I could write about my acorn seed..but I will spare you. I will sum it up telling you why the little open heart door.. Like the acorn…we hold the secrets in our own hearts. If only, we allow it to open so we can look within~
Enough for now…just remember, I warned you that my mind tends to dwell in another place most of the time…usually within the lights and shadows among the trees…or in the face of a flower.”
Well, enough said for tonight..the quote fits…don’t you think? There is SO much in my heart tonight, but it will have to wait. For one thing..it is such a challenge to download a post here..I have been trying to get this to work for hours and it is long past midnight. So think of me this weekend, I will be ripping out old walls and ceilings. :O Just know this…
my heart is full of love…
~like a little acorn~
~like a thousand forests~

Ps If this damn thing will let me I promise to answer your comments from the last post soon..and I hope to visit you all again. You are all in my heart tonight! It takes forever to download if it does at all! :(

I’d love to read more about the house, but until then, just want to say how much that little heart in the acorn delights.
Thank you yb. I may start “talking” more about the house. :)
Just want to let you know that your work makes me feel light in the heart and the knees. Thank you for being brave , wonderful you.
Thank you Heather you have touched my heart more than once!!
I love, love, LOVE this! Absolutely beautiful!
Ahh…thank you Fox. That makes my heart smile! :)
I love your charcoal drawing of the acorn. Really amazing to look at, love all the lines and shadows.
I really want to hear more about this amazing house you’ve moved to the island. I would love to see pictures too! It sounds incredible…I love the sense of history in an old building.
Thank you for you kind and inspiring words Rhea.
As I told yb..I may start sharing more about the old house. It has certainly bewitched us! It is revealing stories to us! :)
Evening Dearest Gypsy-Heart~
MY, MY…can I just tell how MUCH I love this piece?
I have this “thing” about charcoal. I have a tendency to really enjoy the shadowing, and the lack of color that charcoal gives. There’s something so RAW about it.
This piece makes me feel like I’m in a fairy tale and I want to walk through that little heart door and go inside for a peek!
tee, hee!
And your words here, too….are very enlightening about we resemble the birth…life..death cycle of an acorn. Because it’s true!
As always…such a lovely share, dear Gypsy!
P.S. I hope your having a wonderful holiday weekend on the island.
Thank you Ron dear heart.
Charcoal does have an organic rawness to it doesn’t it!
Oh…I love the fairy analogy! I tend to dwell in that world you know. :)
Beautiful, truthful words. We could all learn so much from the little Acorn. The acorn’s love spreads far and deep. Let our acorn do the same. Peace, Light and Love to you and yours . . . CordieB.
Thank you CordieB…and I so agree!
Peace. Light, and Love to you and yours too!
The acorn and it’s creation story are wonderful, Gypsy. Have fun with your walls. I love to bang things down with big tools…kaboom!!!
Thank you kindly Bo. :)
I like to use tools too…it is hard work but so rewarding!
Gypsy~
Thinking of you ripping out walls and ceilings, revealing something new, metamorphosing a home into something even more love filled…
Thank you Sorrow. It is very hard work, but you are right it is loved filled. That is the only reason we took the project on! :O
Gypsy my friend… love this piece… their is a depth you captured in the shadows, the shading is magnificent… a talent indeed.
Don’t work too hard and have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you enreal…you always make my heart happy with your kind words.
I did have a wonderful weekend…hard work…but wonderful non the less. :)
ohhhh….this is stunning and so soft!! and I love writing that goes with it.
Thank you Rosa…you made my heart smile! :)
Beautiful! To me, the acorn is the symbol of all the possibilities inherent in the seed. It can grow into the sturdiest of oaks even though it is so small and seems so unimportant. A wonderful symbol of our strength and out potential. I’m not surprised it “called” to you.
Thank you April and I so agree it is such a symbol!
oh wow! I really really love this! It makes me think of the Victorian faerie painters.
I love drawing in charcoal too. I started drawing with ballpoint pens then pencils then fine line pens but charcoal (and a variety of erasers) is my absolute favorite now.
I think that once you learn the basics of realism then you think in terms of shadows and highlights rather than the shapes of the objects. great stuff!
Thank you Daz, my creative friend!
Hmmm…Victorian faerie painters…I like that! :)
I am not surprised you like charcoal too. Don’t you just love the eraser..to me it is organic too!
Yes…the terms of shadows and highlights…then the objects reveal themselves…eh?
I loVe the Wisdom of the Acorn with the little heart door! It beckons, enchants, and invites us in.
“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Think of the fierce energy concentrated in an acorn! You bury it in the ground, and it explodes into an oak tree!” George Bernard Shaw
I can see why you chose the acorn and it chose you.
The renovation of your 128 year old island house is a labor of love, preservation, and transformation. It is a reflection of your spirit.
Thank you mothermoon how wonderful to see your words here again!
I liked the Shaw quote too!
Thank you also for your encouragement about the old house…could be a reflection of my craziness too…eh, eh. I do so love it though…
GypsyGirl
I love that the Heart is such a staple in your work. It just shows how much LOVE commands your art.
Thanks for that!
Thank you dear Grace…you have no idea how your words touched my heart! Sometimes I wonder why I even do the art. :O
Yeah,
seeds are something else. Am I right in remembering that seeds found buried in the tombs of pharaohs were successfully germinated?
ACORN DOOR HAIKU
life is a matter
of doors. Door, room, house: house is
the seed of the soul
Yes they are 94S…I think I have read about seeds in the pharaohs tombs too. I will have to research it.
I love the haiku…thank you my sweet friend!
Hi,
I finally got to catch up on your blog. The artwork is beautiful as always!!
Love,
Christy
Thank you for your kind words Christy. I need to get over to see yours too!
Beautiful little acorn destined to be a big tree.
Don’t hit your thumb with the hammer.
Thank you wrj!
I usually manage to injure myself somehow. :O
I LOVE this…and the story behind it! :)
Thank you Kalliope dear heart that makes me happy!
Somehow i missed the point. Probably lost in translation :) Anyway … nice blog to visit.
cheers, Slovenly.
No problem..could be translation..could be no connection…and that is okay too. :)
I am glad you like the blog though!
Cheers to you too!
This piece moved me into an opening of potential. My gratitude to you for visualizing such power in deceptively simplistic detail.
Your page was found via a Google search for acorn images (looking for inspiration).
Semi-tangentially, I found this quote in a fortune cookie on 9/16/08: “The mightiest oak in the forest in just a little nut that held its ground.”
I am a scribe, and will hand-letter this phrase in calligraphy as a gift for a friend.
Your gifts are a pleasant side-trip on my creative Path.
Thanks for the lift.
Namaste

*Hello Avenefica how nice to hear from you! :) I love your fortune cookie quote.
I took a peek at a couple of your sites and enjoyed myself very much..I learned something about Geese and loyalty (from your Native American Animal zodiac animal symbols). I had a dream with a hedge hog and a snake in it, and the info on your site helped me to understand the symbolism of the creatures in my dream. So thank you.
Interesting that you are a scribe..I had something happen in meditation and I was told in a reading that it is an ancient scribe.
I look forward to visiting your sites again very soon.
Namaste’ to you too.
